our group of homeschool friends
have been meeting
every other Friday at 10
for some 4H FUN!
and fellowship
our lessons and experiments
have come from
the Acres of Adventures
National 4-H Curriculum
this curriculum has been an AWESOME way
to introduce our kiddos
to life science and
the world of agriculture
and the role agriculture plays
in our lives
every day
at our first gathering
we made homemade play-doh
one batch from whole wheat flour
the other from bleached flour
we added food coloring (because EVERYTHING’S more fun with food coloring)
to both batches
we compared
the smells
the texture
the coloring and density of each
It was A LOT of fun!
at our second meeting
we had a
Mystery Food Touch Test
Cowboy Dan assisted by
filling numbered balloons
with various foods (such as rice, sugar, beans, etc..)
and then
tying the top
we then passed out note cards
had the kiddos number there cards 1-8 (assisting as needed for our youngers)
next we began passing each balloon
allowing each child to touch each
make their best guess as to what was inside
write their guess down on their card beside the appropriate number
once all had made their predictions
we opened each balloon
allowing them to taste the samples as well
FUN!
and then today
we began with a classic story
and a discussion of things pioneers made from scratch
(that we take for granted each day)
and then
we made soap
or should I say we attempted to make soap
(isn’t that half the fun?! will it work? or not?)
the recipe called for soap flakes
OR you could grade a bar or PURE soap
this is a grated bar of Irish Spring
**the experimental factor
3 cups of of grated soap
add 1 to 1 and a half cup of water
mix with your hand until the texture is that of play-doh
place in a mold and let set overnight
