3 Easy-Peasy-No-Stress-No-Lie Gift Ideas

by Karmen |

I felt like I’d been hit by a tidal wave.

I could barely process all of the wisdom.

My eyes bounced to and fro like a racket ball from side-to-side up and down and back again.

I’m pretty sure I became short of breath.

Organization to inspiration.

Creativity to productivity.

Anything a woman could ever hope for, dream of, bake, DIY and take all in one spot.

Pinterest.

It’s been a little over three years since I first visited the land of such goodness, but as I am prone to do, I tried too much too soon.  I barely knew how to pin much less create a board, so I grabbed a notebook and began creating a to-do.  In the blink of an eye, I had a to-do list Wonder Woman and the whole fleet of Avengers couldn’t accomplish.  So I broke up with Pinterest lest I die.

On my way out I filed a few things in my “I really want to remember that file” and because Christmas is only 38 days away (nobody panic) I’m sharing 3 easy-peasy-no-stress-no-lie gift ideas.

Baked Goods

Quality time is the best time.  My mom, two sisters and our passel of children, have an annual bake night.  Baking is nothing new.  People love food anytime time of the year, but they L-O-V-E food during the holiday season.  What is it about chocolate covered pretzels gifted in a Christmas tin?  It’s like our taste buds only love them if Christmas music is playing in the background.

For bake night, each of us is responsible for a recipe and the ingredients for our favorite holiday treats.  We mix, stir, bake, sing, and laugh as we spread the accomplished goodness on the table for sampling. The kids choose a Christmas tin purchased during after Christmas sales last year, fill it to the brim with a variety of salty and sweet, and lastly tag it for those we love.  Everyone leaves with several tins and gifts marked off the list.  #winwin

Photo Books

Are photo albums still available at Target?  Bless him.  My younger son will likely need therapy as he discovers there is only a handful of printed or framed photos of him compared to the countless albums of our first-born.  Of course, I blame social media.  The convenience of snapping, tagging and sharing is so much more time efficient than snapping, uploading, downloading and developing.  But still.  There is something about holding a photo album.  So for the love of photos I make photo books.  There are a whole plethora of online places to create photo books.  I love Shutterfly because it’s easy and they have great seasonal coupons.

Shutterfly-Photo-Book-Motor-OnI upload periodically throughout the year, so it’s not overwhelming.  I choose a photo book theme fitting to each family.  Place the pictures in the easy-peasy to arrange templates and WAH-LAH!

If you love photos in books, give the gift of photo books.  Your people will love you

Saving the best for last…

Kid-Crafted Note Cards

Dear moms of little who love to draw you pictures, this gift idea, is for you.  As a former First Grade school teacher, I had 9865786128973456 handcrafted pictures from your babies before I had my children.  I did my very best to display such preciousness on the walls, windows, doors, my desk, resorting even to hanging handwritten notes and pictures of your families and dinosaurs from the ceiling.  Good times.  And then I had my children.  So now I have 98356028937465 more pictures to display.  There simply isn’t enough space.  But because I love pictures from my kids and handwritten notes this gift idea is the best of both worlds.

Last year I chose 10 of my favorite pictures from each of my boys.  Some of the pictures had vibrant color; some were painted, some drawn with markers, one or two in pen or pencil.  I took them to our local print shop. They scanned the hand drawn pictures, sized them and printed them on the front side of a folded notecard making the most adorable stationary ever!!  One-of-a-kind gifts for those you love!

Have a marvelous day,

P.S. Let’s help keep each other in check this year.  Instead of letting your gift list or Christmas season run you decide NOW to take it slow, and give yourself permission to say no.  This season is about our Savior.

Why a "regift" is my favorite gift this Christmas

by Karmen |

“Momma I got you something.”

Grinning ear to ear as he placed the worn overused birthday gift bag in my hand.

It was with great caution that I emptied the contents of the bag into my lap because this child, our SURPRISE child,  is full of surprises.

Like these:

He told me a couple of weeks back, “All kinds of girls are wantin’ to marry me momma.”

“That’s nice son, but you’re six and by the way God says marriage is one man and one woman. So you’ll have to prayerfully choose one. Sorry son. His rules not mine.”

“No momma, I’m going to go ahead and marry two…one to cook for me and one to feed me.”

Or how about this snippet he shared at the Cowboy’s family Christmas?

“I practice smiling in the mirror 15 minutes every day. After 15 minutes it gets boring.”

This would also be the child that has recently become obsessed with cologne because, “The girls love cologne momma.”

Heaven help me. Seriously, be near me Lord Jesus is on repeat in my head.

He has yet to close all four drawers of his dresser on any given day for his whole entire life.

He loves to wear “sharp boots” (also known as pointed toe boots) and all too often puts dirty close back in his drawers (underwear included)

He loves animals, is a natural around them and would absolutely let any one or all of our barnyard critters sleep in his bedroom with him if we gave him the okay.

The child lead a goat through my living room this summer and told me after the fact, “Momma, Sweet Pea (the goat) wasn’t the least bit scared to go up the front porch steps and through our living room. She’s brave momma.”

He loves dragons and puppies.

He keeps us laughing and on our knees.

Which brings me back to Christmas morning and the gift.

It was through big fat tears with a heart so full I felt as though I could have burst that I mustered, “thank you son.”

gifts

The gift,  my childhood Bible he had gathered from my bookshelf, a necklace he had received from church and a piece of my favorite candy from our town Christmas parade.

A bigger smile would not have fit on his face or mine as he hugged me and said, “Merry Christmas momma.
And then if that weren’t enough to erase all of the things he has ever done that’s made me want to choke him out…he reached for another gift.

“Daddy this one’s for you.”

Smiles all around as the cowboy emptied his overused, worn baby gift bag into his lap where fell a flashlight we’ve had for years, a painted letter “J” and one of Jake’s toy Woody dolls.

“I got you Woody because he matches your coffee cup daddy and your name starts with J and you always need a flashlight, right daddy?”

“Right son.”

That moments made this the Merriest Christmas ever as far as I’m concerned.

Our regifts from our son prompted me to think about how very many of our best gifts are right under our nose.

We look many of most treasured in the eye every day or walk past them in our places and offer them at best, a glance.

I’m notorious for obsessing over things I want to fix from quirky behaviors in my kids or husband to things as trivial as home repairs verses seeing the little moments that add up to make grand memories.

Jake’s gifts to us reminded me to be more grateful for all I do have.

Yes, I know that sounds so cliché and it would be if it weren’t so true.

Thoughtful kids and a loyal husband are at the top of my BEST GIFTS this Christmas.

How about you? Do you regift? lol

No really,  what are you most thankful for this holiday season?

Share your blessings with us in the comment section.

Love y’all and am so very grateful for the community we have here at Blessings Beyond the Barnyard because of YOU…

a Thanksgiving MIRACLE

by Karmen |

A Blessings Beyond the Barnyard update…

>getting ready to host my very first GIVEAWAY..a precious, vintage top, hand stitched quilt!

Compliments of my precious mother.  Details coming SOON!

>If you are not following blessingsbrnyrd on Instagram JOIN IN..when the days are full Istagram is the easiest way to stay connected and informed of the latest happenings on the farm, at the store and life in general…Sometimes the pics are inspirational and other times they’re real like ..the scary, scary picture of one of the boys skanky rooms I posted this morning…

Seriously, Instagram is still my newest favorite place.

>I’m waiting to share an AMAZING story that developed after one of the boys prayed a special prayer.  I hoping he is going to agree to record a quick video with me..This story is too good not to see it told in real life.  (If you were at WVCC a couple weeks ago you know the story)

> A graphic designer friend and I have something simmering.  YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS..Stay tuned…

>Yes, I’, still writing the manuscript.  While dusting (#gasp, I know! I dust. who knew?) the other day I had an epiphany, probably onset by all of the dust but it came to mind most of the major events in my life personally have developed after long seasons of wait.  Our children, evidence #1.  My journey home from public school #2 The development of this blog and the list goes on.  I have made peace with the fact a book can take years.  I am writing late at night while my kids are sleeping and growing because when they are awake, it’s busy and fun and I don’t want to miss a thing.

I ask that you bear with me and stick around.  The manuscript is developing (slowly but surely) Good things come to those who wait.

>Partnered with a friend yesterday and visited the local jail.  It was the best, most refreshing thing I’ve been a part of in a long time.  I’m still processing all of the good things that happened and hope to write about it soon.  Pray for me as I prepare to go back this Sunday to encourage the ladies in The Lord.

> CHRISTMAS TREES are going FAST! if you are local GET YOUR TREE while supplies last at Fort Payne Feed & Garden.

whew… here’s an oldie but a goodie to keep you in the Thanksgiving spirit.

A timehop that’s worth repeating…

a THANKSGIVING MIRACLE

from Nov 2012

****************************************

6 days ago I posted this on Facebook:

“I pray whoever finds the 100 dollar bill I just dropped and lost in Bruce’s Foodland needs it worse than I do or will be honest and return it to the service desk :(”

Within 24 hours we had been blessed two fold.   Given one hundred dollars from two separate people….
To say we were humbled by their generosity is an understatement, praying still for the Lord to bless each one for BEING A BLESSING!!!
Which brings me to today…..I went back to the grocery store for a few items.   While waiting in the express lane
at the service desk I asked the cashier,  “I don’t guess anyone has turned in the 100 dollar bill I lost last week?”
Without reply she stepped away from the register into the small office and began to speak with someone behind the door.
I apologized to the sweet, elderly gentleman standing behind me when he asked, “Excuse me mam, have you been waited on?”
I began explaining to the man what had happened six days prior to our discussion.  He was sincere in offering his regrets,  politely excused himself and went to another line.
The cashier soon returned with another woman who happened to be holding an envelope.
 (insert–>lump in the throat)
“Is that my 100 dollar bill?”
“Yes mam, it is.”
When I noticed the kind elderly man that had just excused himself had returned with his groceries in hand
and was now standing to my left when I said, “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!”
I instantaneously slapped the arm of the kind elderly man “DID YOU HEAR THAT?”
Grinning he said, “I sure did!”
When I shouted, “PRAISE the LORD! FOR HONEST PEOPLE!”  He graciously let me side hug him and left with a smile.
I HAD TO HUG SOMEBODY!
IT’S THE THANKSGIVING MIRACLE!!!!!!!!!
The cashier rejoiced with me and said,  “I told the man who found the money I would request whoever claimed it to call him and let him know it had been returned.”
“Yes mam! Of course! I will be MORE than happy to call and thank him!”
I thanked her again and felt as though I floated out of the grocery store with the week’s groceries and a 100 dollars to boot!
PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!!!
I immediately called the cowboy, my momma and a friend with the news.
PRAISING the LORD for His FAITHFULNESS
As soon as I could get home I began trying to call the number written on the envelope
8 attempts….
first as it was written
then with a 1
then without a 1
with the area code
and without
each time
“I’m sorry, your number may not be completed as dialed“
I asked the cowboy to join my efforts, “Reading the numbers aloud to me to make sure it’s not my error.”
No luck.
I called the grocery store asked to speak with the manager who had returned our money.  I explained to her I was having trouble with the number.
I asked,  “Is the man a regular customer?”
“No mam, I’ve never seen him before.”
“I feel like I’m in the movie It’s a Wonderful Life!”
I left the manager my number and asked her to give it to the man should he call and ask about the money.
She graciously agreed.
I’m NOT making this up!
This is a real story that happened to me.  I don’t believe in accidents.  This incident allowed me again to share with our boys
God hears and answers prayers!
Sometimes God says yes.
Sometimes God says no.
And sometimes God says wait.
To many it’s just a 100 dollars but to me and my family it is and will forever be
the THANKSGIVING MIRACLE!
Happy Thanksgiving week
love y’all

it's just stuff honey (31 questions.. series)

by Karmen |

y’all are the best..we’re almost a week into our series, 31 Questions to Stir Your Soul.

I’m encouraged and very much enjoying your comments and responses to the questions …THANK YOU!

To my introverted, more private friends…it’s absolutely fine if you want to write your answers down for your eyes only..

I’m thrilled you’re reading and following along…

Last night’s question:

what words of wisdom would the married YOU have offered to the single YOU?

***********

The married me would have encouraged the single me with this truth:

IMG_3853

LESS is MORE….

Rest assured if the single me had practiced the frugal practices of thrift store shopping verses the Victoria Secret clothing catalog shopping the Smith’s financial situation would have looked a lot different A LOT sooner…

The 18 year married me would have gently shook the single me by the shoulders and said,

“All that STUFF you think you can’t live without…it’s just stuff honey and it’s going to end up-out dated-in a yard sale or donated or broken…”

“Stop secretly spending beyond your means.

A half truth is a whole lie.

Listen hun, one day your heart may change and your career and the pursuit of the American dream won’t matter as much to you and who knows, you may even decide to come home and be a stay at home momma.”

LESS stuff is MORE peaceful is where I would have started with the single me with a side note sure to mention the importance of communication, healthy boundaries and realistic verses unrealistic expectations.

*********

Speaking of expectations………

What makes an expectation unrealistic?
